How to explain it to your child

Find the in-between question first, then answer the real one.

  1. Ask: what do I need to know first? — 2 boxes of 6 pens → how many pens in total?
  2. Work out the in-between answer. — 2 × 6 = 12
  3. Use it to answer the question. — 12 − 9 broken = 3

Example: 2 boxes of 6 pens, 9 broken: 2 × 6 = 12, 12 − 9 = 3 whole pens.

Every sheet has a QR code: if your child gets stuck, they scan it and get this explanation step by step — without giving the answer away.
