How to explain it to your child
Column by column — ones, tens, hundreds — and carry when a column passes 9.
- Write the numbers in columns, ones under ones. — 234 + 198
- Add the ones. More than 9? Write the ones digit, carry 1. — 4 + 8 = 12 → write 2, carry 1
- Add the tens plus the carry. — 3 + 9 + 1 = 13 → write 3, carry 1
- Add the hundreds plus the carry. — 2 + 1 + 1 = 4
Example: 234 + 198 = 432.
Every sheet has a QR code: if your child gets stuck, they scan it and get this explanation step by step — without giving the answer away.
