How to explain it to your child
Column by column. If the top digit is too small, borrow from the next column.
- Write the numbers in columns. — 523 − 178
- Ones: 3 − 8 doesn't work. Borrow 1 ten: 2 tens become 1, 3 ones become 13. — 13 − 8 = 5
- Tens: 1 − 7 doesn't work. Borrow 1 hundred. — 11 − 7 = 4
- Hundreds: 4 − 1. — = 3
Example: 523 − 178 = 345.
This is the borrowing (decomposition) method. Some schools teach a different written method — use whichever your child's teacher uses.
Every sheet has a QR code: if your child gets stuck, they scan it and get this explanation step by step — without giving the answer away.
