How to explain it to your child
Read the y-axis scale first, then multiply the bar's height by that scale — one grid square rarely stands for exactly 1.
- Find the scale first and say out loud what one grid square stands for. — "1 square = 5 children"
- Count the bar's height in squares and multiply by the scale. — 3 squares · 5 = 15 children
- To compare two bars, convert both to real numbers first, then subtract. — 4 squares − 3 squares = 1 square, 1 · 5 = 5 more
Example: Scale: 1 square = 5 children. A bar 3 squares tall: 3 · 5 = 15 children.
Every sheet has a QR code: if your child gets stuck, they scan it and get this explanation step by step — without giving the answer away.
