How to explain it to your child
Scale 1 : 50 means 1 cm on paper is 50 cm in real life.
- Paper to real life: multiply by the second number. — 1 : 500, 3 cm → 3 × 500 = 1500 cm
- Real life to paper: divide by the second number. — 1 : 50, 400 cm → 400 ÷ 50 = 8 cm
Example: Scale 1 : 50: 4 m (400 cm) in real life is 8 cm on paper.
