How to explain it to your child
Write the numbers underneath each other, start on the right, carry as needed.
- Write the numbers underneath each other, ones under ones. — 3245 + 1872
- Add from the right: ones first. — 5 + 2 = 7
- More than 9? Write the ones digit and carry the rest. — 4 + 7 = 11 — write 1, carry 1.
- Keep going to the front column. — 2+8+1=11 (write 1, carry 1); 3+1+1=5
Example: 3245 + 1872: 5+2=7; 4+7=11 (1, carry 1); 2+8+1=11 (1, carry 1); 3+1+1=5. Makes 5117.
