“I can't do this” — some children say it before they've even looked at the problem. At home, relaxed at the kitchen table, they solve the same problem ten minutes later without trouble. That's not a coincidence, and it's usually not a knowledge gap either. It's a pattern researchers call math anxiety: a learned stress response to numbers that often has little to do with actual ability to calculate.
The distinction matters because the fix is different. A knowledge gap closes with practice. Math anxiety closes by removing the tension first — otherwise the child is practising against their own block, and every new problem feels like one more piece of evidence for “I can't do this”.
How to recognize math anxiety
A handful of signs show up again and again in affected children — alone they look unremarkable, together they form a pattern:
- Your child can solve a problem at home but freezes completely on the same problem under time pressure or in a test.
- Stomach aches, restlessness or arguments show up before math homework specifically — not before other subjects.
- Your child says things like “I've never been good at math”, despite only recently starting the topic.
- One wrong step is enough for the whole page to get pushed aside instead of continuing.
Where it comes from
Math anxiety is rarely innate and almost never about a lack of talent. More often, one of three things is behind it: a time-pressure moment that once went badly wrong (a test, being quizzed in front of the class), constant comparison with a faster sibling or classmate — or, often unnoticed, a parent's own attitude. A casual “I was never good at math either” at the kitchen table works like permission to believe the same thing about oneself.
None of these triggers means something was fundamentally done wrong. They just explain why numbers feel like danger rather than a solvable problem for some children.
What tends to make the tension worse
Well-meant reactions often sharpen the problem without anyone noticing: more practice under pressure, stopwatches and races against time, or lines like “just try harder”. All three send the same message: the result matters more than the attempt. That's exactly what deepens the fear of the next attempt.
What actually helps
The first step is almost always taking the pace out of it: deliberately practise problems with no time pressure, even ones easier than the current schoolwork — a win builds trust before difficulty rises again. A wrong step gets treated as information, not failure: “show me where you got stuck” instead of “that's wrong”.
Just as important is the language at the table. Instead of “that's easy” (which lands as an accusation for an anxious child), try “let's look at the first step together”. And a parent's own negative math history is best left unmentioned — children pick up that attitude remarkably directly.
When to bring in support
Most cases of math anxiety visibly ease with less time pressure, more small wins, and a few weeks of patience at home. If physical symptoms persist (ongoing stomach aches, sleep trouble before tests, crying that won't settle) or avoidance keeps growing rather than shrinking, that's a good moment to loop in the class teacher or a school counselor. That's not a sign anything was missed at home — just an additional perspective that no single household can replace on its own.
